Urban Cabin

The one-bedroom flat is on the first floor of a 1907 house in south Minneapolis, three blocks from Powderhorn Park in the funky neighborhood of the same name.

The flat features good light, off-street parking for two vehicles, a delightful, large screened wrap-around porch and a large fenced yard.

Furnishings include a queen bed, 8-foot-long couch, an alcove with a small fold out double couch and enough floor space for a couple queen air mattresses. The one bathroom remodeled in 2016 features a shower (with a tall showerhead) but no tub. The kitchen has a small refrigerator, gas stove, garbage disposal, microwave, cutting boards that pull out from the cabinets and myriad kitchen supplies of dubious quality (although the knives are sharp). Many lamps with bright light bulbs are scattered throughout the flat and can be moved around.

Ceiling fans grace the dining room and bedroom. Two box fans can be set to blow out the bedroom window and the alcove window. Air conditioning is available via 18,000-British-thermal-unit ductless minisplit. Heat comes from radiators and the minisplit. When no one is in residence, the minisplit is left off and the boiler’s thermostat is set to 55 degrees for winter.

The first set of tenants lived there from May 2015 to October 2022. The new tenant moved in in April 2023; footfalls upstairs and the sound of cats running may be audible, despite soundproofing to the first-floor ceiling and the wall between the stairs and the first-floor bedroom.
